Autumn at Ross Island

This image was taken on my visit to Ross Island last Autumn. Ross Island is a claw-shaped peninsula in Killarney National Park. It is covered in lush vegetation and is a photographer’s paradise.

I love the sliver of sun light on the ground in this image, how the rest of the ground remains in the shadows, and the backlit autumnal leaves. Everything is perfectly balanced.

Gleniff Horseshoe

I took this photograph in my native Sligo last year – the first time in over a decade. It is so easy to take things for granted and I had forgotten how beautiful Sligo truly is. I always go there to charge the batteries, take a walk on the local beach Dunmoran, and visit my nearest and dearest neighbours. There was something very comforting about going home in a very challenging year. This image was taken on the Gleniff Horseshoe – a 10km loop that follows quiet roads with stunning views out to Donegal Bay.

Horse Chestnut Tree on Ross Isaland

I found this wonderful Horse Chestnut tree on Ross island. An island barely separated from the mainland by a small river. The island is mostly covered by stunning forest. I try and get there twice a year if I can to photograph the wild garlic and again for the autumn colours. It really is my happy place.

Wexford Harbour Black and White Photo

The photo was taken at Wexford Harbour at the Passage Ferry. I loved the structural forms of the steel surrounded by tyres – all at different angles and sitting in the still water and the sloped pier becoming a strong shadow in the bright sunlight. I worked this image up in black and white as I thought it would suit the light and mood that I was looking for.

Glendalough Lower Lake

The area of Glendalough in County Wicklow is a very well know place for visitors. Tonnes of tourist flock there year round. It is famous for the scenery and Saint Kevin’s Tower. There are also 2 wonderful lakes; the upper and lower lakes. This image is of the Glendalough Lower Lake. It was captured on a frosty winter’s morning. The lake was complexly frozen.

Dun Laoghaire West Pier

There are 2 piers in Dun Laoghaire. The East Pier and the quieter West Pier. This image shows the West Pier taken from the back, facing Dublin Bay. This black and white photograph was taken using a 4 minute exposure creating the sense of movement in the clouds contrasting with the glass-like sea. I like how a sliver of sunshine hits the pier before our eyes are drawn to the lone fisherman in the distance.

Pigeon House Power Station

The Pigeon House Power Station was established in 1902 to keep up with Dublin’s thirst for electricity. Throughout the early part of the 20th century the power station was extended and adpated as the city continued to grow. In the early 70’s a new power station was built at Poolbeg to the East of Pigeon House – servicing the greater Dublin area until today.

I have been fascinated about this place for a decade. I have often photographed it but not in it until last year. This photo was taken about 3 years ago after getting access to the Poolbeg Power Station next door. At the time I did not know they were 2 different sites. The photos I took from the inside the power station are like something form a film set. It is an amazing piece of industrial era architecture and engineering. To me it is a piece of art in itself.

Knocksink Wood Black and White Forest Photo

One of may favourite woods. I have photographed it a number of times. I found the exposed roots of the tree interesting. They appear like the arteries supplying life to the tree.

Hook Head Wexford

Hook Head Lighthouse is a famous lighthouse in County Wexford. I visited the place a few years ago and this is the only image I took. The lighthouse was behind me. I loved the juxtaposition of the concrete and steel structure against the natural rock. Their harshness was softened by the backdrop of sea and sky. The photo was a 2 minute long exposure so you get that dreamlike affect with the clouds and water.

wild garlic photo Ross island

A wild garlic photo on Ross island captured in the final hours of light on a wonderful day in May. I spent the day on Ross island capturing a series of forest panorama photos in the stunning landscape. The forest floor was covered in wild garlic. I was spoilt for choice all day.  The light was incredible at the end of the day and I had already planned this wild garlic photo on Ross island earlier when I walked around checking various locations on this idyllic part of the Kerry landscape. Thankfully the sun was unobstructed by cloud at the decisive moment and I got exactly what I hoped for. This photo communicates exactly how I felt on that day.
