Boat photo Knocksink

“Still stilled. Composed, dappled, shaded.”

– SJ Mannion

A landscape photo in Wicklow near the village of Knocksink. The old boat stranded on the stream has been there for many years. I decided to go with a colour image for this photo. The timber complimented the rich greens of the vegetation. The place had this beautiful glow from the sunlit leaves. I went back 4 times. I wanted to get the lovely speckled sunlight on the boat, which brought out it’s weathered timber.

industrial photo black & white photography

“Closely knit. Fitted.”

– SJ Mannion

An industrial photo of old storage vessels in an industrial building. The steelwork is caked in years of dust from the manufacturing process. Black and white photography was used to create a somewhat menacing mood and amplify the wonderful shapes of the elements in the scene.

Devils Glen Forest Photo

“A glimmering ray. A felt benediction.”

– SJ Mannion

I spent 3 consecutive days in the Devils Glen in Wicklow during the summer of 2013 shooting forest landscape photos. I got very little time to photograph my landscapes that summer despite the fantastic weather. I came upon this spot on the second evening and I missed my opportunity by about 10 minutes. I wanted to photograph into the sun but I wanted to partially hide it behind the trees to prevent flare, while at the same time getting the star burst affect. My first attempt resulted in very bad flare so off I went on the third day. I knew exactly where and when to stand and because of the unheard of sunny weather in Ireland, I was able to get the shot I imagined. As a landscape photograph I thought a vertical panoramic would work best to show the vertical dynamic of the trees, which formed a perfect V towards the sun. It’s a very optimistic photo and refelcts how I felt at the time.

beach photo Inishowen Peninsula

“A vision, a promise, and a threat.”

– SJ Mannion

I love to take photos of Donegal. A wonderful place and a warm friendly people. Here you see a beach photo of the Inishowen Peninsula. The sprawling Peninsula, with Lough Foyle to the east and Lough Swilly to the west, reaches just far enough out into the Atlantic to qualify as Ireland’s northernmost point. It is remote, rugged, desolate and sparsely populated, making it a special and quiet sort of place. Inishowen is well known as one of the most scenic parts of Ireland, with a vast selection of excellent beaches.

Black and white seascape of Coumeenole Beach Dingle Peninsula

“Crouched, deliberate, full somehow of intent. Emperors of tidal halls.”

– SJ Mannion

This timeless fine art black and white seascape photograph was taken during my trip to Kerry in 2007. It was the last time I used my Mamiya 7 film camera. Stunning Coumeenole on the Beach Dingle Peninsula is one of Ireland’s most amazing beaches. It is located near the village of Dunquin in County Kerry along the southern coast of Ireland. The spectacular scenery of the peninsula offers amazing views, along the slopes of Mount Eagle to Slea Head. Coumeenole Beach was used for the love scene in the David Lean’s 1970 film, Ryan’s Daughter.

Irish Fine Art Photograph Coulagh Bay Co. Cork

“Minor considerations – given up on.”

– SJ Mannion

An Irish Fine Art Photograph of a derelict mobile home and an old ruined house at Coulagh Bay. A good example of the landscape winning out in the end. Coulagh Bay is situated in the heart of the rugged but very scenic Beara Peninsula on the south-west coast of Ireland in County Cork. It consists of a series of small inlets full of nooks and crannies.
