A fine art print photo of the famous Blackrock Baths, taken underneath the spectator seating. It is an amazing scene of weathered concrete and plaster, covered in graffiti. The place oozes with character ironically brought alive while in a state of decay. It was a difficult photo to capture. I had to return on several occasions to get a shot I was a happy with. I actually wanted a sunrise and sunset version, both where the diving platform should be illuminated by the warm sunlight, The tide needed to be out in both instances to get the capture I needed and the light had to be just perfect and at the right time. Easier said than done. This was the only spot under the seating where I could get all the elements coming together perfectly – the light, the platform, Howth Head. the horizon, and most importantly the amazing beams radiating above me. Unbelievably I managed to get the sunrise shot the next morning.
Radiating beams, Blackrock Baths at Sunset received a Diamond award in 2012 IPPA photographer of the year awards.

“Suns rise and set. That is what they do. And we, we record.”

This sunset photo is of the Old Head Lighthouse in County Cork beside Old Head Golf Club. The setting is pretty spectacular. I wanted to shoot a moody atmospheric scene at sunset. The aspect ratio of the image had to be quite wide to suit the space in where it was to be installed. I knew that the sun would be to the very right. This enabled me to shoot a sweeping panoramic photo. I was blessed with some fantastic weather. I wanted the sun just peaking over the horizon so timing was crucial.

Another photo from the Yew Forest in Killarney National Park in County Kerry. If you leave your car at Muckross House you will find it along the beautiful walk near Muckross Lake. The speckled light gave the scene a huge lift and it brought out all those lovely greens in the mosses.

“Rooted, we witness, and still we dance. Spring comes.”
– SJ Mannion
I visited the wonderful Killarney National Park in County Kerry at Spring time to photograph the quite unique yew forest, which is located near Muckross House. Yew trees are very rare in Ireland. They have an unusual appearance and produce what seem to be a huge amount of branches for what is quite a small tree. The more mature trees have deep ridges running vertically up the trunks which gives them a lovely depth. It is a 360º panoramic photo and you can just see Muckross lake in the background.

Woodstock Gardens located in the south east of Kilkenny just outside the picturesque village of Inistioge. The Gardens are home to many fine specimen trees from Asia and South America in particular. A number of these trees are recognised as champion trees due to their size and make perfect subjects for fine art photography. I had checked out the location previously and was blown away by the number of enormous and statuesque tress of all shapes and sizes. The Japanese Thuja trees (in the foreground) and the American Redwood trees (in the background) are both stunning and enormous. Truly beautiful to see. It was shortly after the bad storms in the spring of 2014 and it was sad to see the number of beautiful trees which were blown down. Their mark gone forever. Nothing is permanent and life goes on.
