Drumlin Strangford Lough

“Act I: a play of light and shadow…”

– SJ Mannion

In Drumlin Co. Down, near the coast of Strangford Lough, wind tattered clouds throw skreeds of shadow across the sun dappled wheat fields.

O’Driscoll Castle Cape Clear Dún an Óir

“Time takes Tower, Marquess, Rector, Rook, Castle. Rock itself succumbs.”

– SJ Mannion

On Cape Clear Co. Cork you can find “Dún an Óir” (“The Gold Fort”) which served as the keep of the O’Driscoll’s who once ruled the island. The O’Driscoll’s were a pirate clan who controlled the area around the town of Baltimore, Sherkin Island and Cape Clear Island up until the end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Sir Fineen was the last of the O’Driscoll’s to launch ships upon the waves, sacking towns in Waterford and Wexford.

During the nine years war Fineen sided with the O’Neills of Tír Eoghain and the O’Donnells of Tír Chonaill against the forces of the British Crown. During the invasion which led to the battle of Kinsale, Fineen allowed the forces of the Spain to be garrisoned in Dún an Óir. Fineen survived that war and was forgiven his rebellion, but was called to London to attend the Queen. Elizabeth died soon after, and Fineen quickly followed her to the grave.

Dunmoran Beach County Sligo 2

“As meat loves salt, sea seeks solace.”

– SJ Mannion

A seascape photo of Dunmoran beach, a lovely stretch of strand located in Skreen, County Sligo. The mountain Ben Bulben is visible in the background. It was my playground as I child. I grew up only a mile from there and I spend much of my summers playing there. It’s one of my favorite places on this earth. I guess this beach is the main reason I love the sea.

“This place is old … the jeweled bones of the earth covered and lying easy now. Easy as a sleeping dragon. Undulating sinuous muscular. Hording sound of centuries past.”

– SJ Mannion

An astro photography seascape photo of Dunmoran beach in County Sligo on a lovely still night just after Christmas 2014. It was a very dark night so the exposure lasted several minutes. Dunmoran strand is a beautiful quiet beach situated on the Atlantic coast in Skreen. It is just one of several secluded little beaches dotted along the County Sligo coast. Close to my family home it’s where I spent much of my summers and is very close to my heart.

Drumlins County Down

“Act II: congruence realised.”

– SJ Mannion

A photo taken during a trip to Northern Ireland. The light was amazing and the clouds were moving very quickly across the hills. These types of hills are called drumlins, small, low and rounded, extending from County Down to Donegal Bay and making the landscape look like a basket of eggs. It was incredible to see the sunlit areas literally racing along the ground in the front of my eyes. I took a series of shots around the west coast of Strangford Lough.
